MODERN GARDENERS 2025
The first Care Not Capital trainees. We couldn't have asked for a better group.
For five days this summer, these gardeners turned up from all over the UK to learn about almost everything but horticulture - environmental stewardship, ecology, community engagement and creative reuse of materials - enabling them to transform public and community green spaces into thriving habitats that encourage biodiversity.
At mealtimes we gathered to collect our thoughts and dine together. We asked everyone what their favourite dish had been during the course...

Elizabeth Tophill, Folkestone
Bid Tophill is a Kent-based gardener with a background in the arts working in public and private gardens. She is excited about changing perceptions of what makes a garden delightful by adopting ecological and socially beneficial practices.

Ellie Pritchard, South London
Community gardener, creative facilitator and founder of Arbor Projects - a social enterprise that creates shared green spaces.

Mary Redmond, Glasgow
Mary is an artist/gardener based in Glasgow, and one half of Plant Up with Kate Drummond.

Kate works with Mary as a director of Plant Up, working designing and planting a variety of community green-led initiatives.


Holly Edwards, Essex
Gardener- based in Essex. Specialising in organic food growing, estate gardening and community/ Educational gardening.
"Favourite dish of Fiona's - this is a very difficult decision as all her food is amazing! I loved the nut roast parcels and the beetroot pesto. "


James Higgins, Surrey
James runs Urban Hedges, a gardening business working in both private and community gardenswith biodiversity at its core — and is biodiversity advisor and sustainability officer for SW London local allotment society.


Judith Loesing, London
Architect, joiner, gardener and educator, mainly designing public spaces as a director at East and volunteers at the Hackney School of Food. Her book, London Arboretum, is the outcome of a recent research fellowship with the Architecture Foundation.

Laura McCarthy, Oxfordshire
Gardener and landscape architect who's worked in both private gardens and estates and is now the green space co-ordinator for Oxford Health.

Matthew Cox, Birmingham
Gardener and urban forester with many years experience in community gardens and now runs the charity Birmingham Tree People working directly with communities to plant, establlish and care for trees.

Community gardener and wildlife garden designer specialising in shared gardens

Rachel Whittaker, Nottingham
A Nottingham City Council Horticulturist making a positive difference to our city through people and plants.

Sarah Simpson, Dublin
